Best/Worst of 2008 – Part 1
Posted by Prashant - 23/12/08 at 08:12:48 amEvery year we do a Best/Worst list where people talk about their favorite and most hated (they don’t call it 2000 and hate for nothing) things from the past year. The categories aren’t limited to just BMX, but rather anything people wanted to talk about in their lives, the world, or the local scene. This year I tried to ask as many different people as I could. A small number got back to me very quickly, and some I’m still waiting on. I figured I’d split the list in to two parts, and give you some now, and hopefully we’ll get some more responses back to post after Christmas. If you want to contribute, then shoot me an e-mail with your list (prashantgopal at gmail dot com) and I’ll make sure it goes in. Take a look at some of the lists after the link below.
Best:
1. The amount of quality riding going down. Both in terms of tricks and spots.. Oohhh pool riding!
2. Four people from Ottawa qualifying for metro Kingston. (included in this is Ottawa qualifying right to Tommy Hains placing 2nd! CAME UP!)
3. The road trips that most of the Ottawa dudes took, Rich/Prasheel/Ben in Saudi, 39c to Ray’s MTB, the crew that went to New York, New Jersey, and Philly, and of course getting to go to Florida, Sweden and England! Traveling and hearing about traveling gets me super excited and motivated to ride. It also is going to make for really diverse riding in the new Ottawa movie.
4. Filming with actual film. Chitaroni doing it old school. It looks amazing and makes epic stuff look out of this world. Just wait, watching Gary Young pedal is one of the most badass things you’ll ever see!
5. Riding all day then hitting up the rock quarry then hitting up the bars. Those are the summer days I think about when I’m freezing my ass off in this snow bullshit.
Worst:
1. No warehouse for this winter.
2. Making it all the way to Kingston to get hurt in practice. This is the worst, I still think about it all the time and I’m super bummed I didn’t get to actually ride. There was allot I wanted to get done, and that set up isn’t going to be coming around again any time soon. It would’ve been nice to get broken off doing something more then a straight air over a fucking box.
3. Hate Hate Hate. Hating is good in a healthy dose, but fuck its annoying when there is no fun in BMX because everyone wants to bitch at every little thing you do wrong. I miss the old BMX spirit of “get’er done” and get hyped for your friends.
4. No trails and no one being able to find the time, motivation, space to build them. Really hoping that gets fixed next spring.
5. Getting fed up with Legacy. Its one of my favourite parks and I shouldn’t complain.Im sure everyone is super sick of running into little kids, or old doouch bags who don’t wait there turn, dealing with lurker kids, and ignorant fucks of all sorts.
Best
1. Moxley brothers moving down here.
2. My new bike.
3. Tommy wining metro jam ( and probably will win the bike show )
4. All the hate.
5. Orleans park.
6. People of Toronto.
Worst
1. Not able to ride because I dislocated my knee twice since July, so I haven’t rode since.
2. Steven Moxley moving back in Toronto.
3. CP.
4. Snow.
Best:
1. Riding
2. Riding with my Son.
3. Learning a few new things.
Worst:
1. Riding the same places every time.
2. Being too busy to ride.
Best
1. HATE HATE HATE.
2. Day Trips to Brockville skatepark and street in Kingston.
3. Getting hammered, tangled in dog leashes, almost fighting a 40 year old, passing out and hitting my head on a wall all before the hour of 9:00 pm.
4. Finally getting to see the Cockmasters master cock in a Wendy blowup doll, Its been my fantasy to see that for years.
5. Great friends on and off the bike.
Worst
1. Your Mother.
2. Lack of lights at the Halloween jam and my lack of costume.
3. A long drive to MTL and a short and overcrowded stay at South Parc.
4. The high price of bicycle parts in Canada and high duty fees on US orders.
5. Long distance relationships suck.
Best
1. Traveling to Sweden with Jorden to ride some incredible spots, party with some wild dudes, and get shut down by lots of beautiful girls.
2. Tearing Jeff’s pants off in Hull after the bar, having a cop roll up to an ass naked Bedard and ask “Are you okay son?” and all Jeff had to say was “my friends are assholes” and the cop just laughed and rolled away.
3. Mike Heaton and his ability to not only throw BMX contests but also his uncanny way of keeping them fun.
4. Not so metro! What an amazing event, I wont go into detail explaining it, but instead i’ll throw down some buzzy catch phrases which will jog people’s memories: Rich wins, team ruthless with some of the most exciting qualifying runs, Jeff and Boudreau drunk in the stands, condom balloon toss, porno paper airplanes, catfish, DANCE CAVE, beaks and talons, raw doggin’ it on Leland’s couch, Freak crying. Amazing.
5. Having a chance to be in Florida and go indoor skydiving, ride Chad Degroot’s park, and the Vans indoor park all in one day while driving around in a rented Caddy.
6. Watching a girl tell Jorden that if he didn’t go home with her after the bar, she would kill herself. And then after Jorden told her to ‘jog on’, she goes home and calls Jon, who promptly goes over to her place with a fistfull of condoms, but leaves in the morning before she wakes up, sets her computer’s webpage to meatspin and walks home (but felt guilty on his way so he stopped to help an old lady shovel her driveway). She was all talk, she’s still alive.
7. Hostel 639. Staying in London England with so many of my friends. Andrew Grant, Jorden Guth, Kyle Lafleur, Chris Silva, Jamie Burke and I all got the chance to shred one of the coolest cities in the world for a week.
8. Riding the 1800 baseline pool at the crack of dawn after spending half an hour trying to wake Jeff up to come with us. After we rode the pool we left pictures on his car so when he went to work that day he’d know exactly what he missed.
9. Liam and UAB for continuing to fight the fight.
10. The PVC plus warehouse for sheltering us last winter. Lots of great times were had in there.
11. Ottawa’s metro qualifier. So much fun. Everyone rode hard, lots of visitors, great atmosphere.
12. Everyone turning out for the Landozine video premiere in March and Chris Campbell’s pre-party. 13. Watching Jeff and Pat dance with nasty old cougars at the bar afterwards.
14. 206 burned down. An epic end to an epic reign.
Worst
1. Kingston metro. A bit of a flop.
2. Getting stuck for hours at the chicago airport on our way to Sweden.
3. London’s ability to pop tires and bike shops charging 15$ a tube.
4. Jorden losing his game somewhere along the way this year.
5. Ted is still gone.
6. The lack of a Muskoka Woods jam.
7. Summer went by in a flash.
8. Dumb kids spray painting at CP
9. Bog Life.
Jeff Bedard cockmaster

Best
1. NYC/Philly trip
2. Rays MTB
3. HATE HATE HATE
4. NOT SO METRO
5. Metro Jam
Worst
1. never riding street only CP
2. shit footed leaners
3. Kyle moving to Ottawa
4. not one street session in MTL again!
5. no more ramps at the warehouse
6. serious lack of RUTH!
