On Saturday we held the first annual (hopefully!) Dirt Jam at Josh Brose’s family farm out in Pembroke. The weather all week was terrible, and many of us were worried that Saturday would be rained out entirely but it ended up being one of the most perfect fall days ever. Blue sky, warm sun, crisp air. There were well over 20 riders that showed up to shred the large 4 pack, 4 foot tall street spine and massive quarter to wallride.

The jumps were a little slow to begin with due to the rainy conditions we had earlier in the week, but by mid afternoon they were running perfectly. At certain points the wobbly roll in was holding the weight of upwards of ten dudes. And even with some pretty gnarly stuff being thrown over them, the jumps maintained their shape the whole day (except for one strange crooked rut Jorden kept carving into the first takeoff).

Josh’s family was awesome, they provided everyone there with some amazing chili and hot dogs. And later on in the evening a ham dinner and baked beans to go with the two kegs that were there and all the keg stands we were doing. Notable keg stands include the 30 second record set by some guy with a cut off jean jacket and mullet who disappeared shortly after setting the record, also Rich’s attempt to beat said imaginary record with an earth shattering 18 second run. Rich doesn’t drink beer, but he took that Pabst like a champ.

The riding that day was intense, Emile came out and did pretty much everything which wasn’t much of a surprise. Nor was watching Rich make Bob Kohl proud with giant superman one handers. (see the top of the article) But big surprises came from Ben Desjardins and Tommy Hains, both of whom haven’t done much (if any) dirt jumping before and they both killed it Saturday. Ben Tossed a few double whips over the last set and Tommy had his signature turndowns on lock as well. Other notable tricks include Jorden’s icepick on top of the quarter to sub box (which was easily 8 feet up although nobody got it on film) and Crazy Steve’s big lofty 360s.

I really could write a lot more on the whole event, but if you weren’t there you don’t really deserve the run-down. This was a perfect event, with a perfect crowd on a perfect fall day. I can’t wait until next year and the possibility of doing it all again. Big thanks to The Brose family for making this all possible, thanks to everyone who showed up ready to ride and party and giant thanks AND happy birthday to Josh.

The first annual “Shoot Yourself” contest is now finished. Capital BMX would like to thank absolutely everyone who helped out and got involved, you all made this event a great success. Big thanks to Ten Pack Distribution for providing a box full of prizes, and Joe Mamma’s for not only providing prizes but also organizing the venue. Nearly 40 people showed up last night to the Clocktower Pub in Ottawa to watch the 16 entries submitted by riders across the country.

During the judging process, videos were ranked not only on the level of riding but also how well edited the video was. A well edited video is one that is entertaining, hard hitting, never loses the audience’s attention, and uses music and visual effects to pull the viewer into the video.

Due to the turn in weather today, and the risk of showers, we are pushing the annual Halloween Jam to tomorrow, Sunday, October 31st, at 3pm until dark at Centrepointe Skatepark. Everything else will be as planned with a 180 contest, footdown, and more. Show up with your costume and be ready to have a good time, eat some candy, and win some prizes. Alright everyone. The #1 event of the year is coming up this Saturday October 30th at NOON. Everyone show up with your costume to ride Centerpoint (Legacy) Skatepark and have a great time. I just picked up the box of prizes from Ten Pack and its full of great gear. We have NEVER had a Halloween Jam with so many prizes. Between the stuff that Ten Pack sent, and the stuff Jose at Joe Mamma’s has provided we’re gonna have more stuff to hand out than we know what to do with.

If you don’t care about having fun, then you should probably just slit your wrists now and save the rest of us from paying the healthcare bills that will inevitably pay for your anti-depressants. It’s that time of the year again! Halloween is quickly approaching and as per usual we will be holding a Jam. This year it will be held at CP instead of Kanata and will be during the afternoon instead of the evening… oh the beauty of weekend halloweens. Either way, this is an open invite to every rider in Ottawa to show up and have a good time. We have some great prizes, there will be food and drinks and friends.
