Chad Shackleford is a name that is synonymous with video production in BMX. He’s worked on his own creative projects with the Shine and Shook video series, and done video work for numerous other companies and brands in BMX such as Odyssey, Hoffman, Micreation, System Cycle, Local Exposure Tour, and many others. By a strange twist of fate, we got in touch with Chad, and Rich Redmond asked him some questions to get some insight to what he’s been up to lately. Click below to read the Chad Shackleford interview.

Jeff Bedard Chronicles – Volume 1
Posted by Prashant - 27/03/09 at 11:03:23 am
Jeff Bedard is a hard person to characterize. No matter how much I try to explain him to other people, no one story can do him justice. A few weeks ago I was in Toronto and Leland Nightingale, Jamie Lawlor, and I were trying to describe the type of person Jeff is to Leland’s roommate, and kept trading and sharing stories, each more bizarre then the next, but it still couldn’t accurately describe him. Along with being an incredibly talented and creative rider, he is one of the most interesting people I have ever met in my life, and can simultaneously make you laugh and cringe in disgust with one sentence without even trying. I asked a bunch of different people to share some Jeff stories with me, in hopes that people that don’t know him could get a glimpse in to his character. Some may be short, some may be long, but they will all surely be entertaining. Hopefully as more stories come in, I will continue with further volumes. If you have a Jeff story or photo you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to contact me. Click below to read the first installment of the Jeff Bedard Chronicles.

Bike Check – Ben Kauffman
Posted by Prashant - 12/03/09 at 10:03:57 pmThe Ben Kauffman coverage doesn’t stop. Ben recently got hooked up with Haro/Premium and they got him on two of their top end bikes with all the high end Premium parts. He sent through some photos of both his bikes. We’re still working out the paper work for his lifetime contract to ride for Capital BMX, but for now Ben will be riding for Haro/Premium, and Joe Mamma. Click below to check out the rest of the photos and a list of the parts he’s on.

Trent Barker Photography – Favorite Five
Posted by Prashant - 03/03/09 at 02:03:36 amTrent Barker likes to fly under the radar. He’s been living, riding, and going to school in Ottawa for some time now, but you probably wouldn’t know it. You likely won’t find him at a big street jam, but instead you would more likely find him cruising around solo, with a couple cameras in his backpack, getting rad and shooting photos of interesting found scenarios. He’s been taking photos for a short while now, and his style has quickly progressed along with his preference to medium format film over the more common digital formats. I’m a fan of his bleak and empty looking scenery photos, and asked Trent to send over five of his favorite recent photos, with a bit of background on them. Check them out after the link below, and you can view more work of his on his flickr.

Guelph Weekend Recap
Posted by Prashant - 23/02/09 at 01:02:35 pm
Man of the hour, Patrick Krzyzanowski
So the other day Rich Redmond, Jeff Bedard, and myself (Prashant ) headed down to Guelph for the opening reception of our friend Patrick’s Art Show. He’s been studying fine art at the University of Guelph for a couple of years now, and his body of work and technical skills is becoming more and more refined, so I was excited to see how his work for the show would turn out. His work consisted of large sized watercolour pieces with fine line ink drawing depicting an era of professional wrestling and the “masculinity” of it all. I snapped a few photos at the show, and you can check them out by clicking below.

Zine Mania
Posted by Prashant - 17/02/09 at 10:02:06 pmLately, more and more it seems, zines are making a come back. At least it appears that way to me. Blogs are great, and they are a great fast and cheap way to share information with others, but the tangibility of print cannot be beat, and the ability to self publish, and the freedom to do whatever you like with a zine is something that is often lost with the Internet. Zines were pivotal to me, and hugely inspirational when I started riding many years ago, and I would collect them from all sorts of people and scenes. I ordered the newest issue of Holeshot recently, and read the Freestylin’ retrospective book online (with a great look at zine culture during that era of BMX) and fell in love with zines again and was inspired.
Free Buttons
Posted by Prashant - 12/02/09 at 11:02:14 amI just got a batch of 1″ buttons made up. Hand drawn GREAZY text, with our web address on the outer edge, along with MAVENS OF OTTAWA FREESTYLE on the other. Only 60 of them made, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Comes in white, silver, or gold. You can get them directly from me, and I should have a small amount available at Joe Mamma’s by the end of the end of the week.
Insight – Rich Redmond/Hate This
Posted by Prashant - 10/02/09 at 08:02:23 amThere isn’t much introduction needed for Rich Redmond if you ride BMX in Ottawa, or the surrounding areas. He’s been a staple of the scene for many years, always at the forefront of progressive riding here, and spear heading initiatives throughout the community. Always outspoken, and ready to call out bullshit when he sees it, but can dish out the compliments just the same. His new video, Hate This, is set to premiere at the end of the month after a lot of hard work, so I got a chance to ask him some questions about the video, filming, future projects, and more. Click below to get a little more insight on Rich Redmond and Hate This.

Bro-Cam Check – Brandon Lalonde
Posted by Prashant - 19/01/09 at 11:01:35 am
Brandon’s camera with additional lens.
After the last camera check with Chris Chitaroni, I thought it would be interesting to get some insight on a very different set up. Not everyone needs very professional camera equipment to enjoy the filming/editing process. Brandon Lalonde sent through some photos and words about his bro-cam set up that you can check by clicking below.
