Trent Barker Photography – Favorite Five

Trent Barker likes to fly under the radar. He’s been living, riding, and going to school in Ottawa for some time now, but you probably wouldn’t know it. You likely won’t find him at a big street jam, but instead you would more likely find him cruising around solo, with a couple cameras in his backpack, getting rad and shooting photos of interesting found scenarios. He’s been taking photos for a short while now, and his style has quickly progressed along with his preference to medium format film over the more common digital formats. I’m a fan of his bleak and empty looking scenery photos, and asked Trent to send over five of his favorite recent photos, with a bit of background on them. Check them out after the link below, and you can view more work of his on his flickr.

I was at home in Owen Sound over the Christmas break when I saw this house for the first time. Throughout the house there was garbage, furniture and lots of strange items, like a child’s figure skate and a spray-can of fake snow. I found some newspapers from the mid 1970s so I assume this place has not been touched for at least thirty years.

This past summer was one of the best times of my life as I lived off my income tax return instead of working. Riding bikes, taking photos and drinking drinks for a few months in the sun was really great. I shot this photo of my friend Dave with a few of the things that we found on the street over the course of the summer. AMERICA.

This is from the first, and probably last, roll that I put through my Holga 120N. Since I wasn’t planning on including any riding photos, I thought I should at least get bikes in somehow.

There is not a whole lot to say about this one. Choosing five for this was difficult, as I wanted to pick photos that had some sort of story behind them. I shot this in Hull in someone’s driveway. That whole city smells like a mix of rotting food and gasoline.

The University of Ottawa campus is a weird place when nobody is around so I took the opportunity to walk through some of the unlocked empty buildings and shoot a few photos over reading week. I got a pretty weird look from what was probably the only other person in the whole building when they saw me walk out of the washroom with a camera.

  5. Thanks everybody.

Yes, the flag and the two posters were both found in the streets; the stuff people throw out just blows my mind.
